Ci is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory, a transformative public safety project that will strengthen forensic science capabilities across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for decades to come.
State and local leaders gathered on June 9 to mark the start of construction on the new facility, joining representatives from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS), the Massachusetts State Police, the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM), the City of Marlborough, Greatland Realty Partners and Consigli Construction Co.
Ci partnered with Greatland Realty Partners and Consigli Construction to help bring the Commonwealth's vision for a modern, purpose-built forensic science facility to life. Upon completion in 2028, the four-story, 200,000-square-foot laboratory will serve as the new home of the Massachusetts State Police Forensic Services Division and provide a state-of-the-art workplace for more than 250 public servants supporting criminal investigations throughout Massachusetts.

“The work of forensic scientists and lab technicians are the foundation for countless successful prosecutions,” said Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble in a press release. “Today’s groundbreaking will bring us one step closer to having a modern, state-of-the-art facility to support that mission. This lab will allow us to enhance capabilities not only for Massachusetts State Police investigations, but for the work of local police departments that rely on our services.”
The new Crime Laboratory will consolidate the Massachusetts State Police's existing facilities in Maynard and Sudbury into a centralized location designed to enhance collaboration, improve operational efficiency and provide greater accessibility for law enforcement agencies transporting evidence from across the state.
"Breaking ground on the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory represents an important milestone for a project that will have a lasting impact," said Christopher M. Ladd, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Ci. "We are honored to work alongside Greatland Realty Partners, DCAMM, Consigli Construction and the Massachusetts State Police to deliver a highly specialized facility designed to support forensic excellence, operational efficiency and future innovation."

Ci provided architecture, planning and lab design services for this new facility which will house specialized laboratories, evidence processing areas, administrative offices, training spaces and advanced infrastructure supporting a broad range of forensic disciplines. The flexible design will allow the laboratory to adapt to future public safety needs and evolving national forensic science accreditation standards while supporting the Commonwealth's long-term operational goals.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the facility is pursuing LEED Silver certification and incorporates energy-efficient systems and sustainable building strategies that align with Massachusetts' environmental commitments.
The project also represents a significant investment in the Marlborough community. Located on Greatland's Marlborough Campus, the development will activate a previously vacant site, create new jobs, and provide convenient access to major transportation corridors serving employees and public safety partners throughout the region.
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory is a fully accredited function of the Forensic Services Division through the ANSI National Accreditation Board and provides a broad range of scientific services supporting a fair and impartial criminal justice system. Its scientists perform laboratory testing, crime scene response, evidence analysis and expert testimony across disciplines including DNA, criminalistics, toxicology, latent print and impression evidence, firearms, trace evidence, digital evidence, arson and explosives investigations.
Through thoughtful planning and close collaboration with public and private partners, the new facility will provide a modern environment that supports the critical work of forensic professionals while helping ensure the Commonwealth remains at the forefront of forensic science and public safety.
