Ci Design is proud to announce that Principal and Mixed-Use & Residential Practice Leader Chris Bauer, Assoc. AIA, has been appointed to the City of Wilmington Planning Commission, bringing decades of planning, design and development experience to a role that will help guide the future growth of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Appointed by Wilmington City Council, Bauer will serve a three-year term on the seven-member commission through September 2029. The Planning Commission advises City Council on rezoning applications, amendments to the Land Development Code, street closures and long-range plans and policies, helping shape how Wilmington grows and evolves.

“Wilmington is experiencing tremendous growth, and I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to a community I’ve come to know well through living here and working on projects that are propelling it forward,” said Bauer. “Thoughtful planning can create places that support growth while strengthening the character, connectivity and quality of life that make this city unique. I look forward to contributing my experience while learning from fellow commissioners, City staff and the Wilmington community.”

Bauer has been part of Ci since the international architecture firm’s founding in 2009 and today leads its Mixed-Use & Residential Practice. His experience spans masterplanning, architecture and development strategy for complex mixed-use, residential, retail, hospitality and entertainment destinations across the United States and internationally.

His portfolio includes the masterplanning and design of several landmark mixed-use developments that have transformed what it means to live, work and play in an urban area, including the North Hills Main District and Lassiter District in Raleigh, North Carolina, The Walk in Atlantic City, and Power Plant Live in Baltimore.

Building on his connection to Wilmington, Bauer led the planning and design efforts for Center Point, a major mixed-use development that has been more than a decade in the making. The 23-acre district is planned to bring residences, retail, office, trails and entertainment spaces together as a walkable destination for the community.

Bauer’s appointment reflects Ci’s broader commitment to creating places that respond to the communities they serve. Through his role on the Planning Commission, he will bring the perspective of an architect, planner and development partner to discussions surrounding Wilmington’s continued growth while serving the city he calls home.

In addition to his leadership at Ci, Bauer is active with the Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Architects, International Council of Shopping Centers, and American Planning Association.
